WHAT IS HISTAMINE INTOLERANCE
Histamine intolerance is a common condition. Symptoms usually resembles with that of allergy and are often misdiagnosed or left untreated.
Histamine is crucial for the humans as it helps in regulating different body functions. For example, it regularizes the gut function and opens blood vessels when irritation is present. It is produced by the body and/orcan be taken in with food in various quantities.
Histamine intolerance affects 1% of the population. It can be detected by a thorough blood test that checks the blood's Diamine Oxidase (DAO) levels.
The DAO enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of histamine in the body. It ensures excess histamine is flushed out. In histamine intolerance the DAO enzyme is absent and body has trouble in breaking down the histamine in foods. Consuming foods that are rich in histamine can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms. Some of the histamine enriched foods are:
Avocados, Balsamic vinegar, Cold cuts, Emmental cheese, Eggplant, Gouda cheese, Gorgonzola cheese, Herring, Mackerel, Parmesan cheese, Spinach, Salami, Sausages, Sardines, Tuna, banana, black tea, chocolate, cocoa, citrus fruit, eggs, green tea, kiwifruit, nuts, pineapple, papaya, pears, pulses, raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes, wheat germ and etc
