WHAT IS HISTAMINE INTOLERANCE

Histamine intolerance is a common condition. Symptoms usually resembles with that of allergy and are often misdiagnosed or left untreated.

Histamine is crucial for the humans as it helps in regulating different body functions. For example, it regularizes the gut function and opens blood vessels when irritation is present. It is produced by the body and/orcan be taken in with food in various quantities.

Histamine intolerance affects 1% of the population. It can be detected by a thorough blood test that checks the blood's Diamine Oxidase (DAO) levels.

The DAO enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of histamine in the body. It ensures excess histamine is flushed out. In histamine intolerance the DAO enzyme is absent and body has trouble in breaking down the histamine in foods. Consuming foods that are rich in histamine can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms. Some of the histamine enriched foods are:

Avocados, Balsamic vinegar, Cold cuts, Emmental cheese, Eggplant, Gouda cheese, Gorgonzola cheese, Herring, Mackerel, Parmesan cheese, Spinach, Salami, Sausages, Sardines, Tuna, banana, black tea, chocolate, cocoa, citrus fruit, eggs, green tea, kiwifruit, nuts, pineapple, papaya, pears, pulses, raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes, wheat germ and etc



COMMON SYMPTOMS OF HISTAMINE INTOLERANCE

They normally include the following:


  • Asthma or breathing problems
  • Bloated or cramping stomach
  • Headaches and migraine
  • Irregular or rapid heartbeat
  • Skin problems like eczema, acne and rashes

Histamine intolerance may also carry the following symptoms. If you can answer "yes" to one or more to the six questions below, consider getting yourself tested for histamine intolerance

1. Do you experience sea sickness while boating?
2. Do you excessively sweat at night?
3. Do you suffer from hypotension (abnormally low blood pressure)?
4. Does amosquito bite give you long lasting reactions (swelling/ itching)?
5. Do you suffer from headaches or other symptoms after eating chocolate or cheese?
6. Do you suffer from abdominal cramping prior to or during menstruation (for ladies)?
